When Does a Log Home Need Media Blasting?

When Does a Log Home Need Media Blasting? — featured image

Media blasting isn't the first step for every log home—it's the right step when the existing stain has failed badly enough that recoating won't adhere. Peeling, flaking, heavy darkening, or a thick buildup of incompatible old coatings are common triggers.

When stain has failed, applying new stain over the top traps the old, loose material and leads to quick failure of the new finish. Removing the old coating down to clean wood lets the new stain penetrate and bond properly.

Media blasting is a dry process, which matters in Colorado's short exterior season: it avoids forcing gallons of water into the logs that would need days to dry before staining.

Surface testing determines the right media and pressure for the wood and coating condition. Experience matters—over-blasting can damage sound wood, which is why controlled, tested removal is essential.
