Catching stain failure early is the difference between a maintenance topcoat and a full restoration. The sooner you spot the signs, the less expensive the fix.
The water bead test is the simplest check: spray water on the logs. If it beads up, the finish is still protecting. If it darkens or absorbs, the sealant is gone and the wood is exposed.
Other warning signs include visible fading or graying (UV bleaching the wood), peeling or flaking of a film-forming finish, dark mildew spots, and gaps opening in the chinking between courses.
South- and west-facing walls usually show the first signs because they take the most sun. Inspecting those elevations each spring helps you plan maintenance before moisture damage sets in.
