Colorado winters are hard on decks. Snowpack sits on horizontal surfaces, freeze-thaw cycles work moisture into the wood, and spring runoff can leave behind grime and gray wood fiber.
Start with a post-winter inspection: look for cupping, splitting, or loose boards, and check whether water still beads on the surface. If water absorbs rather than beading, the protective finish has worn away.
A gentle wash with a wood-appropriate cleaner removes winter grime and gray fiber. Avoid high-pressure washing, which can damage the wood surface and drive water into the boards.
If the stain is failing, plan to clean, brighten, and re-stain during the dry part of the season. Regular maintenance staining—before the wood is fully exposed—extends the life of the deck far longer than waiting for visible failure.
