How Professional Painters Prepare Weathered Wood — featured image

Weathered wood—gray, fuzzy, or checked from sun and moisture—won't hold a new coating well without proper preparation. The goal is to remove the degraded surface fiber and expose sound wood.

The process typically starts with washing to remove dirt, mildew, and loose fiber, followed by scraping and sanding of any remaining failing coating. A wood brightener can restore natural color after cleaning.

Once the surface is sound, caulking and sealing gaps, spot priming bare areas, and addressing any minor repairs create the conditions for adhesion. Skipping these steps is why coatings fail prematurely on weathered wood.

The preparation method depends on the wood and coating condition. For severely degraded log finishes, media blasting may be the right first step; for siding, washing and sanding may be enough. The right prep is what makes the finish last.
