How Freeze-Thaw Cycles Affect Exterior Paint

How Freeze-Thaw Cycles Affect Exterior Paint — featured image

Freeze-thaw cycles are one of the biggest enemies of exterior paint in Colorado. When moisture gets behind or into a coating and then freezes, it expands, lifting and cracking the paint film.

The damage compounds when caulk fails around windows, doors, and trim, letting water into joints. That water freezes, widens the gap, and the next thaw lets even more moisture in.

Prevention comes down to preparation: thorough caulking and sealing of gaps, spot priming of bare wood, and flexible acrylic coatings that move with the substrate instead of cracking.

Regular inspection of caulk lines and early attention to any peeling or cracking stops the freeze-thaw cycle from escalating into widespread coating failure.
